Filipinos are very helpful to their families. It's a great pride that we have this kind of love for our loved ones. Since we always look for greener pastures to help them financially, we also like to extend our assistance by bringing them to work abroad.
Two of my younger brothers are now working in UAE. The older is working as an Administrative Assistant in a construction company and the younger is a Safety Officer in the same field. But before they were able to establish their own lives and career in the sand dune, I needed to carefully plan how to bring them to UAE because it requires a huge amount of money and preparation.
Here are some practical steps how to bring your immediate family members and help them look for a job.
1. Set aside a budget. Bringing your brother or any close family member under a tourist visa requires a huge amount of money. Ticket and visa fees cost around 1,800 AED, plus his monthly expenses for housing and food and other necessities. You will definitely support him until he finds a job and earns his first paycheck. However, if your brother is capable enough to support himself for his 2-3-month stay in UAE, then that lightens the case. In my situation, I have to support my brothers; the first one had a little amount of savings to finance his stay. The other one has just graduated from college and passed his board exam.
Prior to your planned date of his arrival, you must at least save money on a monthly basis. This will give you less hassle when he arrives because you have enough budget.
Below is my list of expenses and corresponding amount for their visas, plane tickets, etc.:
1. Tourist Visa (1 month) AED 550.00. For extension of visa for another one month costs AED 850.00. I practically suggest to first apply for a one-month visa. Because when he finds a job in his one-month stay, which is pretty possible, you save another month-visa fee.
2. Plane Ticket (2-way) costs AED 1155.00 plus penalty of AED 150.00. I suggest, do not get a dummy ticket. A dummy ticket is as-if a two-way ticket. Travel agencies are issuing dummy tickets for the purpose of showing only to the Immigration that one will be back to the country of origin.
Money-wise, dummy ticket will cost you a lot of money. It costs around AED 1800.00. However, if you will book for a two-way ticket, you will pay the full amount but when he gets here in UAE, you can refund the return ticket with penalty of AED 150.00. Like in my case, I bought a promo ticket for my brother costing AED 1155 (from Manila) and AED 1150 (from Abu Dhabi). Two days after he arrived, we refunded the return flight (AED 1160) less penalty of 160. We were able to get AED 1010.00. And that, I saved AED 485.00 (Dummy ticket of 1800.00 minus Promo ticket plus penalty AED 1315.00).
3. Accommodation, Food and Transportation. The housing costs AED300 to 500. Food costs AED300 and transportation costs AED100. Since my younger brother lives with me for the mean time, I pay AED 300 to the house owner. I allotted AED300 for his food allowance. Since he lives with me, I accounted for his groceries, toiletries, etc. Transportation in Abu Dhabi is not difficult, because there are many public buses running in the city. Our house is located along the road and the bus stop is in front our house. When we was still looking for a job, we walks along the streets, and when he finishes giving out his CV he will come back home via taxi (average of AED10).
4. Expenses going to Kish Island. God heard our prayer when he found a job as a Safety Officer within a month. Since his company does not cover for expenses for the exit, we have to pay for his exit then. Ticket costs AED770, plus hotel accommodation AED40 per day. He stayed for two weeks in Kish while waiting for his visa. He brought some groceries like cup noodles, biscuits, etc. Take a note that a person under a tourist visa needs to exit the country to able to process further his residence visa.
The part two of this article will discuss about necessary papers, tips on applying for a job and the like.
